Why I Moved from New York to Sarasota—and Why I've Never Looked Back

A Personal Story · Life & Business
Grey skies, endless hustle, and one too many cold winters — here's how I traded it all for sunshine, community, and a life I couldn't have imagined.

There's a moment — if you've lived in the Northeast long enough — when the grey sets in. Not just the weather, but something deeper. You stop noticing the cold. You stop expecting the sun. You just… endure. For me, that moment became a turning point. And it led me straight to one of the most beautiful, vibrant, and welcoming cities in the country: Sarasota, Florida.

This isn't a story about retirement. It's a story about choosing a better life — at any age, at any stage.

“I could not have imagined, while living in New York, how different — how genuinely happy — my life could be.”

The Sky That Changed Everything

I had been visiting Sarasota for three or four years before I finally made the move. I had a dear friend who lived here, and I'd come down with family, soaking up the warmth, the culture, and the pace of life. Every time I returned to New York, I noticed something: my mood shifted the moment the grey skies returned.

Sunshine does something to you. It lifts you in ways you don't fully appreciate until you're living without it. After years of gloomy, cold New York winters — the kind that drag on and drain you — I finally said enough. I packed up my life, left Lake Mahopac behind, and headed south.

A Different World Waiting for You

Sarasota is not what most people picture when they think of Florida. It isn't neon signs and theme parks. It's aquamarine water that glitters in the sun. The Gulf Coast beaches here are unlike anything on the east coast — calm, clear, and breathtakingly beautiful in a way that feels almost unreal.

Beyond the beaches, Sarasota pulses with life and culture. The art scene is extraordinary — world-class museums, fine galleries, and working artists at every turn. Watching the sunset near the Ringling Museum in the evening has become one of my favorite rituals. The sky turns colors that honestly look like a painting.

Then there's the music — live music seven days a week. Jazz, blues, indie, classical — there is always somewhere to go, always something to hear. That alone changed the texture of my life.

The Fear of Starting Over (And Why It Was Worth It)

I won't pretend the move was without fear. My biggest worry was work. I had built a successful graphic/ website design business in New York — Lake Mahopac Graphic Design — and I was terrified that starting over in a new market would mean starting from zero.

So I did something bold. I launched SunCoast Web Studio immediately after arriving in the summer of 2019. I leaned into it, built my presence on Google, and within a short time I was attracting clients organically right here in Sarasota. What surprised me even more? My New York business didn't disappear — clients still find me through my original website, and I continue to serve them remotely. The move didn't end my career. It expanded it.  I now have clients in both New York and Sarasota, and a life I love showing up for every day.

The Life I Didn't Know Was Possible

My stress levels have dropped dramatically. My optimism has soared. I wake up to sunshine. Sometimes I end my days watching breathtaking sunsets or just sitting in my yard. I've found community, culture, beauty, and joy in a city that has something for absolutely everyone and I love running my small business.

Sarasota is not just for retirees. It's for entrepreneurs, creatives, families, remote workers, and anyone ready to trade the grey hustle for something more vibrant and intentional. If you've been feeling that pull — that quiet whisper that there might be more out there — I'm here to tell you: there is.

And for me, it looks a lot like aquamarine water, live music on ANY night, and a sunset that never gets old.
